Cruise Ship Worker Arrested for Shocking Attack at Sea Off Vancouver Island

Juneau, Alaska – A cruise ship worker from South Africa has been arrested and charged following a violent incident aboard the Norwegian Encore vessel off the coast of Vancouver Island. The FBI documents reveal that the man, identified as Ntando Sogoni, allegedly attacked five people, including a 75-year-old passenger, during the voyage from Seattle to Alaska.

According to the affidavit filed by FBI agent Matthew B. Judy, Sogoni attempted to board a lifeboat while the ship was near Tofino, Canada. Security personnel intercepted him, leading to a confrontation where Sogoni allegedly assaulted a security guard and a male nurse before stabbing the elderly passenger with a pair of scissors. Two security guards were also injured in the altercation.

Sogoni was subsequently detained in the ship’s jail and later arrested by the FBI in Juneau. The authorities believe that the incident falls under the jurisdiction of the United States, despite occurring in Canadian waters.

The South African national now faces charges of assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction, with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count. The United States Attorney’s Office will oversee the case, determining the appropriate sentence based on sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors.

Norwegian Cruise Line has been contacted for comment on the matter, but has not yet responded. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with authorities working to ensure the safety and security of passengers and crew on board the Norwegian Encore. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
