Prague, Czech Republic – The Czech Parliament recently passed amendments to the gun law in response to the deadliest mass shooting in the nation’s history. The changes aim to tighten regulations on firearm ownership following the tragic event that shook the country.
The new legislation, which is expected to be signed into law by President Petr Pavel, comes after a lone shooter claimed the lives of 14 individuals and injured numerous others in a horrifying attack at a Charles University building in downtown Prague. The perpetrator, a 24-year-old student who possessed a license to own multiple firearms, including two long guns, had no prior criminal record that would have raised suspicions.
Among the key provisions of the revised gun law is the requirement for gun owners to undergo medical checks every five years, instead of the current 10-year interval. Additionally, businesses will be mandated to report any unusual or suspicious purchases of firearms and ammunition to the authorities. Doctors will also be granted access to databases in order to identify patients who are gun owners.
The debate surrounding the legislation began prior to the tragic shooting incident, with Interior Minister Vit Rakusan acknowledging the challenges of determining whether the new rules could have potentially prevented the tragedy had they been in place earlier. In a decisive 66-1 vote, the 81-seat Senate approved the changes, paving the way for preventive measures that allow authorities to confiscate weapons from private owners under certain circumstances.
As of 2022, approximately 314,000 individuals in the Czech Republic were licensed gun owners, collectively possessing close to a million firearms of varying types.
