Brownsville, Texas – A man from Brownsville found himself in a dangerous situation after arranging to meet someone through a dating app. Instead of his intended date, a group of armed individuals, including two minors, showed up and proceeded to kidnap, rob, and attack him, according to authorities.
The victim reported the incident to the Brownsville Police Department on June 29, prompting an investigation into the aggravated robbery. The victim had initially planned to meet with someone he had connected with on the dating app.
The victim recounted that upon arrival, he was ambushed by the armed group. They tied him up, assaulted him, and forcibly attempted to place him in the back seat of his own car. Subsequently, the group drove the victim to a field, where they continued the attack before abandoning him.
Police were able to identify four suspects involved in the incident. Two of the suspects were already in custody, while the other two remained at large. The suspects’ names were not disclosed by law enforcement officials.
In a statement, the Brownsville Police Department emphasized the importance of safety when meeting individuals from dating apps. They advised individuals to inform a trusted friend or family member about their plans, including details such as location, time, and the identity of the person they are meeting.
Following the investigation, a 17-year-old named Ernesto Jimenez was arrested on July 9 and charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping, engaging in organized criminal activity, and unlawful restraint. Another unnamed minor was arrested a week later in connection with the case.
Authorities urged the public to exercise caution and make informed decisions when meeting individuals from dating apps, emphasizing the unpredictability of such encounters. It serves as a sobering reminder of the potential dangers associated with online interactions.
