Edinburgh, Scotland — A Christmas Eve incident at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church turned chaotic when a statue of the baby Jesus was vandalized, raising concerns about mental health issues among those involved. The event occurred shortly before midnight Mass in one of the city’s most significant places of worship.
Witnesses reported that two visitors appeared agitated prior to the service. While police have yet to confirm specifics of the situation, Father Gerard Hatton, one of the church’s priests, suggested that the disturbance was linked to mental health struggles faced by the individuals involved.
Father Hatton, who was not present during the incident but returned shortly afterward, described a scene of confusion. He found five police officers inside the church, along with a man kneeling before the damaged Nativity scene. He noticed blood on the floor and heard unsettling accounts of what had transpired.
According to Hatton, a young woman, known to both him and his colleagues, initiated the destruction by hurling the Jesus figure from the altar. He also mentioned an English man who reportedly became involved in a confrontation with her, ultimately discarding the statue in a bin.
“This person was extremely aggressive and hostile towards the church and its staff,” Hatton recalled, highlighting the unexpected nature of such vandalism during the festive season.
In a statement posted on social media, St. Patrick’s church called for prayers to address the violence that had occurred. The church’s message expressed sorrow over the desecration and urged for healing in light of the incident, which also involved disturbances in the Lady Chapel and physical aggression within the sacred space.
St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, an 18th-century establishment, has a storied history, originally serving diverse religious communities before becoming a Catholic parish in Victorian times. The church has been a place of refuge and prayer, making this incident particularly distressing for the congregation.
Authorities are investigating the situation further, and the local police force has been contacted for official comments on the events. The community seems to be rallying in support of the church, seeking to restore peace and sanctity in the wake of the Christmas Eve incident.
