EDINBURGH, Scotland — A statue of the infant Jesus was destroyed during a chaotic incident at St. Patrick’s Church on Christmas Eve, leading to significant distress among worshippers just before midnight Mass.
Witnesses revealed that two visitors appeared emotionally disturbed prior to the service at one of Edinburgh’s prominent Catholic churches. Although police have yet to release a statement detailing the incident, Father Gerard Hatton, one of the church’s three priests, indicated that the situation may have been linked to mental health issues.
Hatton, who was absent from the church when the disturbance occurred, returned to find a heavy police presence inside. According to him, a man was observed kneeling near the altar, appearing distraught, and there was blood on the sanctuary floor.
“I came back from dinner to find five policemen in the church and a man kneeling at the crib with his hands up. There was blood on the floor,” Hatton recounted. He mentioned that a young woman known to the clergy had reportedly experienced a mental health crisis, during which she removed the baby Jesus figure from its place and threw it around the church.
Another individual, described by Hatton as an aggressive visitor, became involved in the confrontation. This man not only clashed with the young woman but also tossed the baby Jesus statue into a bin.
“He was very aggressive and rude, showing intense anger towards the priests and the church,” Hatton said, noting that the situation escalated quickly.
In response to the incident, St. Patrick’s Church shared a post on social media, calling for prayers for healing and reparation. The statement expressed sorrow over the violence that occurred, mentioning various disturbances including another incident with threats made against the church earlier in the year.
In the aftermath of the incident, church leaders emphasized their commitment to restoring peace and security in the sanctuary. They noted that the church, which dates back to the 18th century and has a rich history, would undergo a purification process following the events.
As the community processes this unsettling night, officials from Police Scotland have been engaged but have not yet commented on the ongoing investigation. St. Patrick’s seeks to uphold its role as a place of worship and solace in a bustling urban environment.
