Drive-by Shooting Duo Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter in La Jolla Party Incident

San Diego, California – Two individuals, Odyssey Sellers Carrillo, 23, and Malik Joshua Campbell, 24, have pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and other charges in connection with a fatal drive-by shooting that took place at a La Jolla house party. The incident occurred on June 23, 2019, resulting in the death of 20-year-old Nina Silver and the injury of three other individuals.

The shooting, which took place in the 7500 block of Cuvier Street, was determined to have gang-related motivations according to prosecutors, with Silver being an unintended victim. Originally facing murder charges, Carrillo and Campbell opted to plead guilty to lesser charges in court.

Carrillo, who authorities allege was the shooter, was apprehended following a high-speed police pursuit in July 2019, while Campbell was arrested two months later. The two men are set to be sentenced in July, with Carrillo facing a 35-year prison term and Campbell facing 24 years, as announced by the San Diego County District Attorney’s office.

Details revealed by the San Diego Police indicate that the shooting took place when an individual in a sedan traveling through the alley fired multiple rounds at the victims. Carrillo’s guilty plea encompassed charges of attempted murder and assault with a semiautomatic firearm, while Campbell admitted to three counts of assault in connection to the incident.

The tragic death of Silver at the hands of the drive-by shooting serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing violence plaguing communities, with legal actions now being taken against the perpetrators. The upcoming sentencing of Carrillo and Campbell underscores the severe consequences individuals face when involved in such heinous acts, emphasizing the importance of justice in ensuring the safety and security of all individuals in society.
