Driver flees scene of Wisconsin wreck on foot while his mother is left dying in the vehicle

MUSKEGO, WI – A tragic series of events unfolded Sunday evening in suburban Muskego after a car plowed into a roadside ditch, ultimately leaving a 77-year-old woman dead and her son facing serious criminal charges.

Authorities say the single-car crash occurred on Hillendale Drive shortly after 7 p.m., drawing neighbors and emergency crews to the chaotic scene. When officers arrived, they found the wrecked vehicle with the elderly woman trapped in the front seat—alone and unconscious. Rescue workers smashed the windows to pull her from the mangled car, but despite their efforts, she died at the hospital an hour later.

What raised further alarm, according to investigators, was the absence of the driver. Witnesses said the man behind the wheel, later identified as 47-year-old Casey Yiannackopoulos, clambered from the vehicle following the crash and stumbled away, appearing disoriented and visibly intoxicated. Observers told police the man smelled strongly of alcohol and assured them he was seeking help, but he never returned.

Video captured by neighborhood security cameras is believed to reveal the moments leading up to the crash, where a dark sedan is seen speeding down the residential road at nearly double the speed limit before careening off the pavement. The footage provided investigators with crucial evidence as they tried to track down the missing driver.

Within hours, police turned their attention to a nearby home where the victim reportedly lived. While searching the property, officers discovered signs that someone had recently hidden in the crawl space above the living quarters. Using a drone to peer into the confined area, they finally located Yiannackopoulos beneath a pile of household items. Despite officers’ calls for him to surrender, he initially resisted, angrily shouting from his hiding spot before eventually being taken into custody.

Police described Yiannackopoulos as glassy-eyed and showing other signs of alcohol impairment. Investigators say he ultimately told officers the crash was accidental, further remarking that had he known his mother was dead, he “would have been way more cooperative” with authorities. His blood was drawn for testing, with results still pending.

Yiannackopoulos now faces charges that include first-degree reckless homicide, fleeing the scene of a fatal hit-and-run, and resisting arrest. Court documents allege his recklessness and subsequent flight from responsibility directly contributed to his mother’s death.

During his first appearance in court this week, the presiding commissioner voiced deep concern at the details of the incident, remarking on the gravity of leaving a parent behind after a crash.

Currently, Yiannackopoulos is being held on $750,000 bail at Waukesha County Jail. He is slated to appear in court again on Thursday as the legal proceedings continue. The name of the victim has not been released while authorities complete their notification process. The investigation remains active as law enforcement officials seek to piece together the exact sequence of events leading up to the fatal wreck.
