Elderly Woman Assaulted in Home Invasion, Suspect Remanded in Custody

Perth, Australia – A man charged in connection with a violent home invasion and robbery in Perth’s north, where an elderly woman was allegedly attacked, was recently released from immigration detention following a significant High Court ruling. Majid Jamshidi Doukoshkan, 43, was among 149 detainees set free after the High Court declared indefinite immigration detention unlawful in November 2023, sparking controversy as some of those released were subsequently accused of reoffending.

Doukoshkan is accused, along with others, of being involved in the home invasion and burglary that resulted in 73-year-old Ninette Simons being hospitalized with head injuries. The couple, Ninette and her 76-year-old husband Philip, were reportedly deceived by the group posing as police officers before the incident took place. Police stated that valuables worth over $200,000 were stolen from the victims during the burglary.

In court, Doukoshkan faced multiple charges, including aggravated home burglary, aggravated assault, and impersonating a public officer. He appeared before the Joondalup Magistrate’s Court and was denied bail, remaining in custody. Another individual, Emmy Ruzzel Signo, 48, faced similar charges related to the incident and was also remanded after not seeking bail.

The arrests followed the execution of search warrants over the weekend, during which police recovered jewelry, handcuffs, and a WA Police badge and hat. Detective Inspector Gary Butler revealed that additional individuals had been charged in connection with the incident, with one suspect still at large. However, he expressed confidence in the ongoing investigation and hoped to bring the suspect to justice soon.

The victims, Ninette and Philip, are still traumatized and have not returned home since the incident. Ninette Simons expressed her fear and anxiety following the attack, detailing her struggles with pain and dizziness. Police are hopeful that the recent arrests will provide some semblance of peace for the couple and aid them in finding closure as they continue to support them through this difficult time.
