GRAFTON, WI – A harrowing domestic dispute nearly turned fatal Friday when police rushed to a Grafton home to find a woman critically wounded and her estranged husband in custody after what authorities described as a sudden and violent escalation linked to looming divorce proceedings.
Guy Paider, 53, is accused of shooting his wife during a fraught exchange that investigators say unfolded in the minutes before law enforcement arrived at the couple’s home. The incident drew a swift response from Grafton Police and the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office after a frantic 911 call signaled something had gone terribly wrong.
The day began with Paider’s wife, 48, meeting with her attorney to discuss dissolving their marriage. When she returned, Paider reportedly confronted her, insisting on a conversation about what she wanted from the divorce, but she resisted discussing the matter in front of their child. According to authorities, once the child was sent away, the house grew tense, and an argument rapidly intensified.
Investigators cited in statements that as the couple was left alone, Paider forced his wife onto the bedroom carpet and opened a drawer—one usually reserved for his clothes. But inside, he seized a handgun.
In the moments that followed, police reports say, the woman screamed for help as her husband made a chilling demand: he allegedly ordered her to look directly at him before threatening to open fire. Her desperate pleas were heard by officers entering the home.
Law enforcement officers arriving at around 3:50 p.m. described hearing the victim’s calls for help as soon as they entered. As they neared the source of the cries, Paider allegedly fired multiple shots, striking his wife just before officers could intervene.
Emergency medical teams quickly airlifted the woman to a Milwaukee hospital, where she was treated for severe injuries and later stabilized. No officers or the couple’s child were injured during the ordeal, though responding deputies later detailed the tense atmosphere inside the house and the urgency with which they acted.
Paider, who has a background as a firefighter in West Allis, was arrested at the scene without further violence. As he was escorted from the property, neighbors looked on, shocked by the sudden burst of sirens and flashing lights—a quiet street upended by tragedy.
Investigators are now combing through evidence, trying to understand the buildup to the violent confrontation. The case highlights both the unpredictability and heightened risk that can occur as relationships unravel, especially when firearms are involved.
Paider remains held in the Ozaukee County Jail as the district attorney’s office reviews the facts ahead of formal court proceedings. Officials say the investigation remains active as they continue to gather witness testimony and physical evidence.
