HOUSTON, TX — Richardson Mortuary in Houston has come under scrutiny following a viral video that allegedly documents neglected bodies within its premises. The footage, recorded by a family member of one of the deceased, has prompted an investigation by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
The video, which quickly attracted widespread attention on social media, depicted several bodies in various stages of neglect, reportedly causing alarm among other families with loved ones at the mortuary. One woman recognized her grandmother, who had been due for cremation.
The incident escalated further when an altercation between the videographer and a mortuary employee resulted in the latter allegedly stabbing the former. Authorities report the injury was superficial, and investigations suggest the employee may have acted in self-defense.
While the identities of those involved in the altercation were not disclosed, Tamara McGruder has spoken publicly about the grim conditions inside the funeral home. McGruder and her brother, responsible for filming the viral video, arrived seeking updates on their deceased mother and uncle. Upon entering, they were confronted with an unsettling scene: bodies in various states of exposure within a building undergoing renovations and lacking air conditioning.
“It’s bodies in caskets, boxes, plastic bags. It’s no A/C, it’s gnats. It smells like rotten blood,” McGruder described. She recounted discovering her mother’s casket, which was infested with insects.
Murita Brown, another concerned family member, recognized her grandmother’s burial attire in the video. She expressed her frustration, pointing out that her grandmother was scheduled for cremation weeks earlier, yet her ashes had not been returned.
Adding to the distress, Demtrious Riley-Sylvester revealed that her family was misled into believing her brother’s remains had been cremated. “Just throw him away like he’s trash,” Riley-Sylvester said, expressing outrage over the discovery.
Authorities noted that the owner of Richardson Mortuary is currently hospitalized following a heart attack, and steps are being taken to relocate the bodies to other funeral homes. Harris County Precinct 7 Constable Smokie Phillips, who personally knows the owner, confirmed these developments.
Over the past decade, Richardson Mortuary has faced 14 complaints, raising concerns about the establishment’s operational integrity. The ongoing investigation will determine the necessary legal and regulatory responses to this alarming situation.
