CORNELIUS, OR – The holiday shopping rush nearly turned tragic for a local family when a young child became the target of a kidnapping attempt inside a busy Walmart just days before Christmas, according to local authorities.
Around 8 p.m. on December 21, a family was shopping in the Walmart on North Adair Street when a stranger tried to snatch their child from a stroller. Moments later, the father intervened, acting quickly to prevent the abduction.
Witnesses recalled a tense struggle unfolding in the aisles as the father fought to keep his child safe from the would-be kidnapper. Authorities said the suspect brandished a knife during the altercation, escalating the incident, though the weapon was dropped in the chaos. The child’s father suffered minor injuries but successfully shielded the child from harm.
Customers who witnessed the scene reacted immediately, some memorizing details of the suspect and his getaway vehicle as he fled. A white Jeep was soon spotted leaving the parking lot, and witnesses were able to provide investigators with a description and license plate number.
Authorities located the vehicle shortly after and arrested 37-year-old Denis Villalobos. Investigators say store surveillance footage captured both the incident and the moments leading up to it, indicating that the suspect appeared to be watching the family beforehand.
The child’s parents expressed relief and gratitude that their child was unharmed, though the experience has left them shaken. The mother, reflecting on the ordeal, urged fellow residents to remain vigilant, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of such threats even in close-knit communities.
Deputies charged Villalobos with attempted kidnapping, assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and menacing following the grand jury indictment. He remains in custody at the Washington County Jail as he awaits his court appearance.
Investigators continue to review security footage and gather additional witness accounts. Authorities commended both the swift action of the child’s father and the bystanders whose observations aided their investigation.
Local officials reassured residents that incidents of this type are rare, but encouraged families to remain watchful. The Walmart has since increased its security presence, and the community is reflecting on the event’s narrow escape from tragedy.
