Feud-Linked Pipe Bomb Explodes in Limerick City Residence, Gardaí Investigate

Limerick City, Ireland – Authorities are actively investigating a pipe-bomb incident that occurred at a residence in Limerick City early on Sunday morning. Reports from local residents indicate that the improvised explosive device detonated in a rear garden of the house, causing a loud bang. This alarming event took place at Hyde Road, Ballinacurra Weston, Limerick, around 4 a.m.

The attack is believed to be connected to an ongoing violent feud between rival groups on the south side of Limerick City. This incident marks the latest violent episode in the area within just over a week, raising concerns among law enforcement officials about the potential for severe injuries or fatalities if the feud escalates further.

Previously, on January 23rd, shots were fired at a male individual on Hyde Road, although he managed to escape unharmed. Individuals involved in the feud reportedly have ties to the Dundon McCarthy crime group, which has been linked to several homicides in the city.

Various violent acts, including stabbings, drive-by shootings, petrol bombings, and pipe-bomb attacks, have targeted multiple homes and individuals as part of the ongoing feud. Many of those involved have connections to criminal gangs engaged in drug sale and distribution.

Of particular concern is the safety of children in the vicinity of these violent incidents. Law enforcement authorities have issued warnings that the involvement of children in such dangerous confrontations could easily lead to injuries or worse if the violence persists.

In response to the escalating situation, a Cork-based Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit from the Defence Forces, specializing in handling improvised explosive devices, has been dispatched to Limerick to address explosive materials left under vehicles. However, the Garda Siochana did not request the unit’s assistance following the pipe-bomb attack, as the device had already detonated.

A statement from a Garda spokesperson confirmed that an investigation into the explosive device incident at a residence in Hyde Avenue, Ballinacurra Weston, Co Limerick, is currently underway. As of now, no injuries have been reported to the authorities, and the investigation remains ongoing.
