Financial dispute ends with Bakersfield man beating his 71-year-old father to death

BAKERSFIELD, CA – Authorities have arrested a California man accused of killing his elderly father, driven by a dispute over money, according to court filings. The suspect, identified as 49-year-old Alfred Juarez Jr., faces a series of charges including murder, elder abuse resulting in great bodily injury, robbery, and carjacking.

Bakersfield police were called to a home on the 6100 block of Chandler Way around 6:30 p.m. on October 13 in response to reports about an unresponsive man. Upon arriving at the residence, officers discovered 71-year-old Alfred Juarez Sr. had suffered signs of assault and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators later arrested Juarez Jr. in Los Angeles County, and he remains held without bail at the Kern County Jail.

Court documents reviewed by authorities detail the incident leading up to the elder Juarez’s death. Surveillance footage from the home reportedly showed the younger Juarez aggressively confronting his father outside the residence. According to the documents, Juarez Jr. forcefully pushed open the door and struck his father in the head. The encounter escalated when the son allegedly spun his father around and forcibly removed car keys from the older man’s belt.

Moments after the confrontation, Juarez Sr. clutched his chest and collapsed, while Juarez Jr. allegedly exited the scene in his father’s vehicle. The video evidence, summarized in the arrest report, provided critical insight into the altercation and Juarez Jr.’s actions before fleeing.

After his arrest, Juarez Jr. reportedly told detectives he believed his father owed him $5,000, prompting the visit to the home. According to investigators, Juarez Jr. acknowledged that he became enraged when asked to leave and claimed he went back inside with the intention to “finish the job.” Interview transcripts indicate he was aware of his father’s precarious health, including a history of cardiac problems.

Authorities say Juarez Jr. expressed no remorse for his actions and reiterated similar sentiments to those made during a previous incident. In 2020, Juarez Sr. reportedly suffered a heart attack following an alleged assault by his son, with comparable statements made regarding Juarez Jr.’s intentions at the time.

The suspect’s next scheduled court appearance is set for October 27, while the investigation continues. Police have not disclosed whether any additional charges might be filed as the case develops. Local authorities say the incident highlights the dangers of unresolved family disputes, particularly when coupled with known health vulnerabilities.

The Kern County District Attorney’s Office is prosecuting the case. Details from the ongoing investigation have not indicated the involvement of additional suspects. Family members of both men have not issued public statements.

Officials stress the importance of community awareness in addressing elder abuse and encourage anyone with information related to the case to come forward.
