Florida father beaten and strangled to death by 19-year-old son after saying son shouldn’t get food because he doesn’t work

MELBOURNE, FL – A domestic incident over a meal has led to manslaughter charges against a Florida teenager accused of causing his father’s death following an altercation against the backdrop of familial tension.

Police reports indicate that 19-year-old Julien Welch-Beddoe engaged in a violent confrontation with his father, 45-year-old Francis Welch, on the evening of January 19. The dispute reportedly started when the younger Welch-Beddoe prepared a plate of food, which his father opposed, allegedly telling him he did not deserve the meal because he lacked employment.

The conflict turned physical when, according to the affidavit, Welch-Beddoe’s father pushed him as he attempted to carry his dinner to his bedroom. The younger Welch-Beddoe responded by putting his father in a headlock and punching him several times in the ribs, eventually wrestling him to the floor using a chokehold.

The confrontation was momentarily broken up by Welch’s fiancée, who stepped in to separate the two. Both parties retreated momentarily until Julien heard a distress call from his father’s fiancée, prompting him to return to the living room. There, he found Welch unresponsive, exhibiting labored breathing through his mouth and showing signs of pallor.

Emergency services were summoned and Welch was transported to Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital. He succumbed to his injuries shortly after midnight on January 20. A subsequent autopsy revealed a fatal laceration on his spleen, a result of trauma inflicted by one of three fractured ribs.

Following his father’s death, Welch-Beddoe ceased engaging with authorities without legal counsel present. He was later charged with manslaughter and arrested on February 5. Authorities placed him in the Brevard County Jail, setting his bond at $50,000, with a scheduled court appearance on March 25.

The charge of manslaughter signifies that while there may have been no intent to kill, Welch-Beddoe’s actions are considered reckless enough to warrant criminal responsibility for his father’s death. The case highlights a tragic escalation of domestic discord and underscores the severe consequences of violence within family dynamics.

Family members have not publicly commented on the case, and it remains unclear how this incident will impact future familial relationships. The tragic outcome of what began as a simple disagreement over food serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable dangers of domestic altercations.
