Green Beret goes missing after he tells his wife he’s leaving her for his girlfriend then his body is found in pond

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – A Fayetteville woman is facing serious charges following the discovery of her husband’s remains nearly two months after he was reported missing. Authorities have charged Shana Cloud, 50, with first-degree murder and concealment of a death concerning the death of Clinton “Clint” Bonnell, a former Green Beret.

Clinton Bonnell, also 50, was reported missing on January 28 when he failed to show up for a class at Methodist University, where he was training to be a physician assistant. The concern was initially raised by a friend and his school, prompting a welfare check by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. Shana Cloud informed deputies that she last saw her husband the previous day. During their visit, deputies found Bonnell’s car, along with his school books and personal items, at the couple’s home.

On February 25, law enforcement responded to a disturbing report of human remains found in a pond on Gainey Road, roughly three miles from the residence Bonnell shared with Cloud. According to a caller to 911, a torso was visible floating in the water—a sight described as macabre.

Following forensic analysis, the remains were confirmed to be Clinton Bonnell’s on March 28. As a result of the identification and subsequent investigation, authorities arrested Cloud the same day.

The investigation into Bonnell’s disappearance involved multiple searches of their residence and extended to Cloud’s vehicle, rental properties, and digital footprints. These efforts helped to reconstruct a timeline of activities leading up to Bonnell’s disappearance.

Information gathered revealed that Bonnell intended to divorce Cloud, having met with a lawyer on January 27 to start the proceedings. According to a warrant, this was communicated by Bonnell to his girlfriend, who relayed the details about him meeting with a divorce attorney that morning. The girlfriend also reported receiving a text from Bonnell that evening, where he indicated his plans for separation.

No further details have been released regarding the events directly involving Cloud in the crime. The ongoing investigation aims to piece together the exact circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Bonnell.

As the case unfolds, members of the community and those who knew Bonnell are left grappling with the shocking turn of events. Bonnell, a well-respected figure and U.S. Army veteran was seen as a dedicated student and family man, making the accusations against his widow all the more unsettling.

The legal process will continue as the judicial system attempts to bring clarity and justice to the complex and deeply personal circumstances surrounding Bonnell’s death.
