Oxford, Michigan – In a Michigan courtroom, James Crumbley, the father of a teenager who carried out a deadly school shooting in 2021, has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. His son used the 9mm handgun purchased by James and his wife, Jennifer, to kill four students at Oxford High School. The couple, accused of neglecting warnings about their son’s mental health struggles, were the first parents of a school shooter in the U.S. to face such charges.
Prosecutor Karen McDonald emphasized James Crumbley’s failure to prevent the tragic incident, stating that he had a legal duty to protect others from his son. However, defense attorney Mariell Lehman argued that James was unaware of his son’s plans and did not know he needed to safeguard others from him. Despite this defense, the jury returned a guilty verdict for James Crumbley after a day of deliberations.
Both parents now face the possibility of up to 15 years in prison for their involvement in providing the weapon used by their son in the school shooting. Their son, Ethan, is already serving a life sentence for the attack that claimed four lives and left several others injured.
During her trial, Jennifer Crumbley testified that James had purchased the gun as an early Christmas present for their son, intending it for use at a shooting range. She asserted that she never suspected her son was capable of such violence. The couple was notified by the school about concerning behavior by their son before the shooting, but allegedly resisted taking him home for counseling.
In light of numerous firearm incidents involving young people, pressure has been mounting to hold parents accountable for providing access to weapons.
