Gunfight Erupts in Fatal Minneapolis Shooting, Officers Fire in Self-Defense, BCA Reports

Minneapolis, Minnesota – The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension recently disclosed details surrounding a fatal shooting on Blaisdell Avenue in Minneapolis. Officers responded to reports of a shooting at an apartment on Blaisdell Ave, with officer Jamal Mitchell being the first to arrive at the scene.

Upon arrival, Mitchell observed two injured men on the street, one of whom was identified as suspected shooter Mustafa Mohammed. As Mitchell approached Mohammed, who was seated next to his car, an altercation ensued where Mohammed shot Mitchell at close range multiple times.

Subsequently, Mohammed began firing at other approaching officers, prompting Officer Nick Kapinos to discharge his handgun and Officer Luke Kittock to fire his department-issued rifle, ultimately striking Mohammed. During the exchange of gunfire, Kittock sustained injuries but was later treated and released from the hospital.

In addition to the officers involved, a Minneapolis firefighter and a bystander who was shot in the incident were also treated for injuries. The bystander remains in critical but stable condition. The BCA recovered a handgun with an extended cartridge at the scene and is currently reviewing the homicide that occurred in the apartment building at the request of the MPD.
