Jerusalem, Israel – The Association of Rape Crisis Centers in Israel has released a report detailing evidence that Hamas gunmen committed sexual crimes during the 7 October attacks. The report alleges that the attacks involved violent rapes of women, conducted collectively or in front of an audience. Hamas has denied these allegations, but the report brings together evidence from various sources, including forensic investigations and witness statements.
According to the report, the attacks on 7 October resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the taking of 253 others hostage by the Palestinian armed group. In response, Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of 29,300 people, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
The report by the Association of Rape Crisis Centers in Israel outlines “brutal acts of violent rape, often involving threats with weapons, specifically directed towards injured women.” It also states that “many rape incidents occurred collectively, with collaboration among the perpetrating terrorists,” and that “some cases of rape were conducted in front of an audience, such as partners, family, or friends, to increase the pain and humiliation for all present.”
The report has been submitted to the UN Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, and Israeli officials have expressed frustration with the slow international response to the allegations. Additionally, independent UN experts have expressed concern about reports of violence by Israeli forces against Palestinian women and girls in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
Israel has rejected these allegations as “despicable and unfounded.” The ACCRI’s executive director has stated that the report leaves no room for denial or disregard, and it brings attention to the ongoing issue of sexual violence in conflict zones. The report also highlights the need for a more robust international response to such allegations.
