Heroic Son Races to Save Father from Violent Attack in Houston Apartment Complex

HOUSTON — A 71-year-old man is reflecting on his narrow escape from a violent robbery, crediting his son with saving his life. The incident occurred outside their apartment in the Gulfton neighborhood, leaving the senior shocked but grateful.

Surveillance footage shows the victim returning from a shopping trip when a masked assailant slipped into the apartment complex behind him. In a sudden attack, the suspect placed him in a chokehold and threw him to the ground just outside his door. The victim, who prefers to remain anonymous, lost consciousness during the altercation, fearing for his life as the attacker rummaged through his pockets.

The victim, a janitor originally from El Salvador, expressed disbelief that such a crime could happen in his neighborhood, where he has lived for two years without incident. While he lay on the ground, his adult son was at home, unaware of the unfolding crisis until he heard the commotion from the living room.

In a dramatic sequence captured on video, the son rushed toward the door after realizing his father’s distress. The footage reveals his swift reaction as he confronted the attacker, managing to knock off the suspect’s hat during the struggle.

“I saw my dad on the ground and just reacted,” the son recounted. “I yelled at him to get away.” His intervention caused the assailant to flee the scene, but the suspect remains at large, prompting an ongoing investigation by Houston police.

Detectives have noted that the suspect spoke in a dialect that suggested he might be from Honduras or El Salvador, potentially impacting the charges he faces. Due to the victim’s age, the perpetrator could face more severe consequences if apprehended.

“I’m just thankful we’re both safe,” the victim said, expressing pride in his son for acting decisively in a moment of crisis. “It could have been much worse.” They both hoped the police would locate the attacker soon to prevent further violence.

Authorities are encouraging anyone with information about the incident to reach out to them or contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477). The family hopes that by sharing their experience, they can help ensure others do not face a similar ordeal.
