Home invasion horror in California as man stabs couple with screw driver

MURRIETA, CA – A quiet morning in suburban Murrieta erupted in violence Wednesday after a deadly break-in left one man dead and his wife hospitalized, authorities said, sending shockwaves through a neighborhood more accustomed to the sounds of children playing than sirens.

Shortly before 8:30 a.m., panic echoed from a home on Old Spring Road. According to police, an intruder—later identified as 36-year-old Manual Alvarez—forced his way into the house, restrained neither by relationship nor recognition, and unleashed a sudden, brutal attack.

The assailant reportedly stabbed the 70-year-old man with a knife and assaulted his wife, driving a screwdriver into her head. Despite her injuries, the woman managed to dial 911, gasping to the dispatcher that she believed her husband had been killed and that the perpetrator had dashed out through the rear door.

Grim determination mobilized Murrieta officers, who arrived within minutes. They urgently attended to the injured woman and checked the man for signs of life. Their immediate efforts could not alter the grim reality—the husband died at the scene.

Meanwhile, a citywide alert was sent out as officers fanned out into the streets and backyards, scouring for the suspect. A manhunt soon honed in on a suspicious figure hiding barefoot in the brush of a nearby ravine on Wild Flower Drive. The man, clad in a black shirt and pants, matched the description given by the injured woman but remained firmly concealed, ignoring police instructions to surrender.

Officers deployed a police dog, which swiftly forced Alvarez out of hiding, police said. He was apprehended and transported to a nearby hospital for minor injuries sustained during the arrest before being booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center. As of late in the week, police said he had not been cleared to stand before a judge.

Investigators believe Alvarez did not know his victims and entered the house through an unlocked door on a seemingly random spree of violence. At this stage, a motive remains unclear, and law enforcement continues to piece together the attacker’s movements before and after the incident.

The wounded woman remains in the hospital, stabilized but recovering from her injuries. Murrieta authorities have withheld the identities of the couple as they notify family members and seek to unravel the sequence of the attack.

The assault cast a long shadow over the neighborhood, where many residents expressed disbelief. Some described the sudden flurry of police cars and helicopters as “surreal,” hinting at a sense of vulnerability previously unimagined in their community.

With Alvarez now facing homicide and attempted homicide charges, the community has been left searching for answers and a sense of safety. The investigation is ongoing, and police have called on anyone with information about the attack to come forward.
