CHANDIGARH, INDIA – In a shocking and violent incident that shook the Dera Bassi civil hospital, two rival groups engaged in a brutal clash, turning the medical facility into a battleground on Friday evening. What initially began as a street fight stemming from an old feud in Mukandpur village quickly escalated into a chaotic and bloody scene within the hospital walls.
The altercation involved individuals identified as Anil Kumar, Naresh Kumar, Naib Ram, Angrej Singh, Gurmeet Singh, Mahipal, and Manish Kumar, all hailing from Mukandpur village. After encountering each other at the hospital following a prior dispute in their village, the situation spiraled out of control, leading to a violent confrontation witnessed by stunned onlookers.
The confrontation was marked by a display of uncontrollable rage, as the men resorted to using various objects at their disposal as weapons—resulting in injuries inflicted with sharp surgical tools, chairs, hospital equipment, and other objects. The scene left a trail of blood on the hospital floor, prompting terror among both staff and patients as public property was destroyed in the process.
Following the incident, law enforcement authorities swiftly responded to the scene, arresting the perpetrators who sustained serious injuries during the altercation. The accused individuals are now facing legal consequences under non-bailable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.
The violence spurred a strike among medical professionals at the hospital who raised concerns over inadequate security measures that put their safety at risk. Additionally, Punjab health minister Dr. Balbir Singh denounced the attack and emphasized the significance of strict legal action against those responsible for violence against medical personnel and damage to hospital property.
In response to the incident, heightened security measures, including the deployment of PCR teams and increased coordination with hospital authorities, have been put in place to prevent similar incidents in the future. Senior police officers are working closely with doctors to ensure a safe environment within the hospital premises. The harrowing events at the Dera Bassi civil hospital serve as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining safety and security in healthcare facilities to protect both medical personnel and patients.
