Idaho man who claims he wanted to end grandfather’s suffering killed him with hatchet

SANDPOINT, ID – Residents of a quiet Idaho community are reeling after a 69-year-old local man was found dead in his home, an incident that has left family and friends searching for answers and mourning the loss of Joseph Reyes.

Authorities responded to Reyes’ residence on Tuesday after his grandson, Jeremiah Kiley, called emergency services to report that a violent encounter had occurred at the home the two shared. When deputies arrived, they discovered Reyes deceased, having suffered fatal injuries.

According to investigators, Kiley, 29, initially claimed that he acted in self-defense during a confrontation with his grandfather. Law enforcement documents indicate that Kiley told officers Reyes had been experiencing a severe mental health crisis and allegedly threatened him with a firearm the night prior to the fatal event.

Further statements revealed that Kiley said he was concerned his grandfather might locate more weapons hidden around the house, setting the stage for an escalating sense of fear. Despite Kiley’s assertion of self-defense, police reports allege he also said his actions were intended to ease his grandfather’s suffering, although the specifics of this claim have yet to be clarified by authorities.

Court documents show that Kiley admitted to striking Reyes in the head with a hatchet. Investigators have not released further details on why Kiley waited until the following day to alert law enforcement, leaving many issues unanswered as the case moves forward.

Throughout interviews with police, Kiley reportedly displayed a range of emotions, shifting from calm to agitated as the questioning continued. Detectives have stated that their inquiry is still in its early stages, but emphasized there is no threat to the broader public, describing the situation as an isolated act.

Friends and acquaintances describe Reyes as a longstanding member of the community, known to keep to himself and valued for his quiet presence. As news of the violent act spread, shock and sadness gripped those who knew him.

Kiley was taken into custody on a charge of second-degree murder without further incident. During his initial court appearance, a judge set his bail at $1 million. Kiley remains in the Bonner County Jail awaiting future proceedings, with his next court date scheduled for Jan. 21.

Authorities continue to investigate to determine the series of events that led to Reyes’ death. Meanwhile, loved ones remember Joseph Reyes as a man whose life ended in tragedy, hoping for answers and justice as the legal process unfolds.
