Illinois woman leaps from boyfriend’s moving car after he kidnaps her and beats her until her skull is exposed

KIRKSVILLE, IL – Cold midnight fog blanketed the rural landscape as a bloodied woman staggered through it, desperate for help and safety. The chilling sight startled a local resident, whose call for help brought deputies racing to the typically quiet streets of this central Illinois town.

Authorities say the harrowing ordeal began late on December 30, when 31-year-old Thomas A. Welch allegedly turned a routine drive into a nightmare for his girlfriend. According to investigators, the couple, joined by 33-year-old Cody Kimery, had been driving in the Mattoon area when an argument escalated to violence. Officials allege Welch stopped the vehicle, threatened to kill the woman, and struck her on the head with a hard object, opening a gash so severe her skull was visible.

With blood streaming from her forehead, the victim pleaded repeatedly to be let out of the car, but officers say both Welch and Kimery refused. For nearly an hour, she remained trapped in the car as it wound through the countryside, her situation growing more dire with each passing mile.

Eventually, as the vehicle slowed to nearly 20 miles per hour, the woman made a desperate decision. She hurled herself from the moving car, rolling onto the cold ground. Staggering through darkness and mist, she found her way to a nearby home, where the startled resident alerted authorities to her dire condition.

Deputies with the Moultrie County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene shortly after 1 a.m., finding the woman severely injured and in shock. She was quickly transported to a local hospital, where medical staff closed the wound on her head with staples.

As the investigation unfolded, authorities located Welch’s vehicle, which was equipped with a dashboard camera. Footage from the device allegedly shows the chaos that unfolded inside, including the woman’s frantic pleas for release and a conversation between Welch and Kimery in which Welch chillingly threatened her life.

Kimery now faces a charge of unlawful restraint for his alleged role in the terrifying incident. Welch has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated domestic battery, and kidnapping.

Law enforcement officials say Welch was apprehended last week and is currently being held at the Moultrie County Jail without bond, as the court process begins.

The survivor is recovering from her injuries as the community grapples with the shocking details of what happened that night in their midst. Authorities have praised the swift response of the neighbor whose call brought emergency aid in time, while emphasizing the ongoing need for vigilance against domestic violence.

As legal proceedings move forward, investigators continue to review evidence to piece together the full sequence of events leading up to the woman’s escape and the charges brought against both suspects.
