INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Shadows and suspicion swirled around a quiet neighborhood on South Catherwood Avenue earlier this month, where a grim discovery shocked even seasoned investigators. A son stands accused of a killing so disturbing, authorities say it left a home in chaos and a family shattered.
Bryan Pedigo, 54, now faces charges including murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery, and auto theft in the violent death of his 81-year-old father, John Lloyd Pedigo. Police allege that the crime unfolded behind locked doors, the brutal aftermath hidden until a desperate series of phone calls led officers to the grisly scene.
The chain of events began on December 11, when Marion County police launched a death investigation. The first hint of trouble reportedly came after Bryan Pedigo contacted an acquaintance. In that call, Pedigo allegedly confessed to killing his father, triggering a 911 call that sent law enforcement to the family’s home.
Despite receiving initial reports, officers found the residence locked and apparently empty during their first visit. But the situation escalated when a witness contacted authorities again after peering through a window and spotting what appeared to be a body, swaddled in a rug, lying motionless on the living room floor.
Upon their return, officers confirmed the terrible sight: a man’s remains wrapped tightly in a patterned rug, injuries on the victim’s body pointing to severe violence. Nearby, Pedigo’s mother, 79-year-old Olanna Pedigo, was discovered in a recliner—disoriented and suffering from visible trauma, including bruising and uncontrolled bleeding. Paramedics rushed her to the hospital, where she was treated for a brain injury.
Initially, Olanna Pedigo had little memory of the violent ordeal. But as she regained her bearings, she voiced a chilling suspicion, wondering aloud if her own son could be responsible for the bloodshed. Investigators, picking through a home strewn with blood and melted candle wax, worked to piece together the events.
Detectives say evidence suggests there was a fierce struggle that ended in John Pedigo’s death. The victim bore ligature marks around his neck, and candle wax had been poured over his face—a detail that distinguished the scene with a particularly gruesome touch. Blood-stained clothing and a toppled artificial tree were found nearby.
An autopsy determined that John Pedigo died from multiple blunt force injuries. As police searched for answers, they noted his gray Ford F-150 was missing. Using license plate readers, law enforcement tracked the vehicle to a highway nearly 90 miles away, where Bryan Pedigo was apprehended and brought back to Indianapolis.
In interviews, Bryan Pedigo’s recounting of the night changed several times, investigators said. His stories varied from claims that he found his parents unharmed to assertions that a demonic force was responsible for the carnage. He also cited family turmoil and heavy drinking as contributing factors, at one point saying he couldn’t remember what had happened.
