Intruder Fatally Shot in Carmichael Apartment in Case of Self-Defense

CARMICHAEL, Calif. – In a recent incident at the Sutter Crossing Apartments in Carmichael, Sacramento County, a man was shot and killed inside an apartment. Deputies arrived at the scene after receiving a report that a man had been assaulted in his bedroom while he was sleeping.

The man inside the apartment informed authorities that he had shot the intruder in self-defense. According to Sergeant Amar Gandhi of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, the man explained that the person he shot was the ex-boyfriend of the woman present in the apartment, who was identified as the man’s current girlfriend.

Both the man and woman cooperated with the investigation, leading authorities to conclude that the shooting was an act of self-defense. Attorney Michael Wise emphasized that individuals in California have the right to defend themselves, especially within their own homes, under state laws governing self-defense.

The firearm used in the incident was legally owned and registered to the man who fired the fatal shot, further supporting the case for self-defense. Wise clarified that even if the firearm had not been legally registered, the use of deadly force in self-defense could still be justified.

Details regarding the past behavior of the ex-boyfriend towards the woman were not disclosed by investigators, and the identity of the deceased individual has not been revealed. The shooter is not facing any charges in connection with the incident.

Overall, the authorities’ determination that the shooting was an act of self-defense highlights the complexities surrounding legal use of force in such situations, underscoring the importance of understanding one’s rights and responsibilities under the law.
