Investigation Concludes: Parents of Evergreen High School Shooter Cleared of Criminal Wrongdoing After Tragic Incident

Evergreen, Colorado – The parents of a teenager who fatally shot himself after wounding two classmates at Evergreen High School in September 2025 will not face criminal charges. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday that a review spanning nearly five months did not yield evidence to implicate the parents in the incident.

The shooting unfolded on September 10, when 16-year-old Desmond Holly opened fire at the school before taking his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The injured students, for whom extensive medical care was necessary, are reportedly recovering.

Investigators revealed that the firearm used by Holly was a Smith & Wesson .38 Special revolver, a weapon that had been in the family for decades. The sheriff’s office noted that the gun was kept securely locked away, and there was no indication the teen had access to it without supervision. A detailed statement from the sheriff’s office emphasized their commitment to a thorough investigation, despite community expectations for different outcomes.

Following the shooting, significant efforts were made to trace the firearm’s history, but establishing its ownership proved challenging, especially after the original owner deceased. Authorities, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, aided in this complex search.

Genetic analysis conducted on the weapon did not link it to the parents, who maintained through their attorney that the revolver was inherited from Holly’s grandparents. The family’s attorney indicated that proper safety precautions were in place and that Holly had limited access to the locked safe.

Continuing their investigation, sheriff’s officials sought to determine whether the parents could be held liable under Colorado’s laws regarding firearm storage. Ultimately, they concluded that insufficient evidence existed to support any charges.

The sheriff’s office reiterated its recognition of the pain felt in the community following this tragedy, with hopes that healing could begin. They indicated that the case remains open, pending any new evidence that could lead to further legal action.

In the aftermath of this tragic event, mental health resources have been made available to students and community members affected by the shooting. The Evergreen Resiliency Center has been established to provide support, operating daily and offering assistance to those in need.

The situation surrounding Holly also raises questions regarding his state of mind prior to the shooting. Reports have emerged concerning his activity on online platforms linked to extremist content, prompting discussions about how online influences might have affected his actions.

As the tragedy lingers in the memory of the community, officials continue to seek answers, while residents grapple with the profound repercussions of the shooting and strive for healing.
