Jailed Trio Sentenced After Violent Redruth Burglary and Shooting

Redruth, Cornwall – Three individuals have been sentenced to prison after being convicted of a range of offenses, including a violent attack involving a shooting and burglary in Redruth. Paul Amoah, Lee Mitchell, and Gavin Smale, all residents of Redruth, were sentenced at Truro Crown Court on January 30th. Amoah received a 27-year sentence, Mitchell received a nine-year sentence, and Smale was sentenced to seven years for their involvement in the attack.

The incident, described by police as “brazen,” took place on Drump Road on July 6, 2023. After breaking into a residence, Amoah shot one individual with a Beretta handgun, while Mitchell assaulted another individual with a hammer, and Smale acted as a lookout outside the property. Police reported that the men also burglarized the residence, taking cash and one of the victim’s passports.

During the sentencing, Detective Inspector Dave Egan emphasized the seriousness of the attack, highlighting the life-threatening injuries sustained by one victim who was shot in the back. Egan noted that the victim narrowly avoided being killed and required multiple surgeries to recover. Another victim sustained a head injury while attempting to barricade himself in a room during the attack.

Superintendent Ian Thompson, the police commander of west Cornwall, expressed relief that such grave offenses are rare in the area but acknowledged the significant impact they have on the community when they do occur. Thompson praised the swift and professional police response that led to the arrest of the suspects shortly after the incident.

Amoah, Mitchell, and Smale were found guilty of various charges including attempted murder, wounding with intent, and aggravated burglary. Amoah was sentenced to 27 years, Mitchell to nine years, and Smale to seven years in prison for their respective roles in the attack. The court’s decision reflects the severity of the offenses committed and aims to hold the individuals accountable for their actions.
