Justified: Suffolk County Police Officers Cleared in Fatal Shooting of Bruce Boyd During Wellness Check Incident

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. — An investigation by the New York Attorney General’s Office has determined that Suffolk County police officers acted lawfully when they fatally shot Bruce Boyd during a confrontation in April. The findings, announced on Thursday, concluded that the use of deadly force was justified as officers faced an immediate threat.

On April 4, police were dispatched to Boyd’s residence for a wellness check after receiving concerning information. When officers arrived around noon, they knocked at the door but received no answer. Attempts were made to reach Boyd’s wife, who was at work, and she subsequently spoke with police. Officers decided to wait for her to return home and unlock the door.

Upon entering, Boyd’s wife quickly exited, signaling immediate danger. Investigators reported that Boyd emerged shortly thereafter from a hallway, visibly injured and brandishing two knives. According to the Attorney General’s Office, as Boyd approached an officer with one of the knives raised, law enforcement repeatedly urged him to drop the weapon.

As the situation escalated and Boyd advanced, officers fired their weapons, fatally striking him. The incident was recorded via body-worn cameras, which aided the investigation and provided critical insights into the encounter.

Following the incident, two knives were recovered from the scene. The Office of Special Investigation frequently reviews cases involving police use of deadly force to determine if actions taken were within the legal boundaries set forth by state law. They noted it was not possible to disprove the officers’ legal justification in this case.

While the report found that the officers acted lawfully, a full investigative report is expected to be released later this year with additional details. The Office of Special Investigation emphasizes transparency in cases where police encounters lead to civilian fatalities, ensuring that all findings are made available to the public following comprehensive reviews.
