WAYNESVILLE, NC – Authorities in western North Carolina have arrested a man accused of kidnapping and repeatedly raping a woman he allegedly held captive for almost five months, according to local law enforcement records.
Winston Eccleston, 26, faces a series of serious charges that include forcible rape, kidnapping, and weapons violations following an investigation led by state authorities in Buncombe and Haywood counties. The case came to light after a woman, missing since January, escaped her alleged captor’s hold in late May and contacted the police.
Investigators say the ordeal began when the victim accepted a ride in Asheville—a decision that quickly escalated into horror as she was reportedly held against her will. According to court documents, Eccleston restrained the woman using chains, confined her to locked boxes, and sexually assaulted her repeatedly inside a pair of campers at an RV park on Weeping Cherry Drive in Waynesville.
Court records indicate the victim described being subjected to relentless control and threats. She told detectives she was often kept in chains and forced into both wooden and metal boxes to prevent her from escaping. She also recounted physical abuse and insulting threats that law enforcement say were used to keep her compliant.
The conditions inside the campers were described as squalid and disturbing. Authorities executing search warrants discovered five malnourished dogs crammed into makeshift cages and boxes, alongside piles of trash and animal waste strewn across the floor. Detectives reported finding a wooden box sealed shut containing several canines, as well as a collection of firearms displayed on a wall above a bed in the living area.
Among the weapons found were an AR-15-style rifle, a pistol with its serial number removed, and a .22 caliber handgun. Nearby were sets of handcuffs and multiple restraints, including ropes, locks, and a plastic container filled with zip ties, gloves, a face mask, and a whip. Investigators also noted the presence of surveillance cameras positioned to record inside the space.
A truck toolbox found on the premises contained what authorities described as additional evidence of captivity—a collection of blankets, socks, chains, and a heavy odor indicating prolonged use, as well as carpets lining the interior.
While held captive, the victim was at times taken outside by her alleged abductor. Search warrants describe interactions that included dining at a local Applebee’s restaurant with Eccleston’s father, and visits to his father’s residence for meals and showers. On one occasion, the victim recounted being transported in a trash can on the back of a work vehicle.
Records reveal that in a monitored jailhouse email, Eccleston corresponded with his father about a photo allegedly showing the victim prior to her captivity. The elder Eccleston discussed his phone records to identify the date of one such public outing. Law enforcement have since searched properties connected to Eccleston’s father, who acknowledged to authorities that the pair frequented a second location to bathe.
No charges have been brought against Stephen Eccleston, the defendant’s father, in connection with the investigation. Authorities have not specified whether he is suspected of further involvement.
Despite occasional appearances in public, investigators allege Eccleston maintained tight control over the victim through threats and violence. The woman ultimately escaped in late May, prompting authorities to act on obtained search warrants.
Winston Eccleston was taken into custody at the end of May and was formally indicted earlier in July. He remains jailed at the Haywood County Detention Center without bond, with his next hearing scheduled for September 15.
