Kidnapper Convicted and Sentenced After Assaulting Nancy Pelosi’s Husband

May 19, 2024 – Washington, D.C. – Following a harrowing incident that took place on October 28, 2022, in the home of Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and her husband, Paul Pelosi, justice has been served as David DePape, 44, of Richmond, California, was sentenced to 30 years in prison and five years of supervised release for assault and attempted kidnapping charges.

The sentencing comes after DePape’s conviction for his intrusion into the Pelosi residence, where he attempted to kidnap Nancy Pelosi and assaulted her husband, Paul Pelosi. The severity of the sentence serves as a stark warning that violence against public servants and their families will not be tolerated.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland emphasized the importance of upholding the principles of democracy, stating that violent actions against those in public office have no place in society. U.S. Attorney Ismail J. Ramsey echoed this sentiment, highlighting the significance of holding individuals who target public officials accountable for their actions.

Special Agent in Charge Robert Tripp of the FBI San Francisco Field Office underscored the commitment to protecting citizens and ensuring that democracy remains strong in the face of threats posed by extremist beliefs. DePape’s attack was fueled by misguided ideology, emphasizing the dangers associated with resorting to violence as a means of achieving one’s goals.

The trial revealed that DePape had meticulously planned the attack on Nancy Pelosi, collecting personal information about her and intending to harm her physically. On the night of the assault, DePape armed himself with various weapons and tools, breaking into the Pelosi residence with the intent to carry out his violent intentions.

Despite the trauma inflicted upon Paul Pelosi during the attack, he managed to alert authorities to the situation, leading to DePape’s apprehension by law enforcement. DePape’s subsequent conviction on assault and attempted kidnapping charges underscored the gravity of his actions and the importance of upholding the rule of law.

As the case concludes, the FBI San Francisco Field Office, U.S. Capitol Police, and San Francisco Police Department continue to investigate the matter, ensuring that justice is served and that individuals who pose a threat to public officials are held accountable for their actions.
