Winnipeg, Manitoba – A 25-year-old man with a history of drug-related knife crimes was arrested for a daytime knife attack at a popular burger restaurant in Osborne Village. Ethan Joseph Muswagon was taken into custody by Winnipeg police officers after reportedly slashing a male diner at the Burger King on Osborne St.
The officers apprehended Muswagon in the parking lot area behind the restaurant, where the violent incident had taken place a day earlier. The Winnipeg Police Service spokesperson, Constable Jason Michalyshen, stated that law enforcement had been actively searching for Muswagon following the attack.
Michalyshen expressed surprise at the suspect’s return to the scene of the crime the next day, highlighting the concerning behavior and decision-making involved. Muswagon faces charges of aggravated assault, robbery, and various other offenses related to the incident.
The victim of the attack, a 45-year-old man, was found with a serious upper-body injury and transported to the hospital in critical condition. The police revealed that the individuals involved were acquaintances and were engaged in a dispute prior to the violent altercation.
Muswagon’s criminal past includes previous convictions for possession of a dangerous weapon, failing to comply with court orders, and a two-year custodial sentence for sexually assaulting a teenage girl in Norway House. Reports indicate that he struggled with substance abuse and mental health issues, often resorting to drugs like methamphetamine.
In sentencing Muswagon, the court emphasized the importance of counseling and support to address his underlying issues. Despite various run-ins with the law and violent incidents, he was given further probationary measures and restrictions. Muswagon’s mother had previously spoken out about the dangers of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, underscoring the long-lasting impact it had on her son.
The case reflects broader challenges with mental health, addiction, and criminal behavior, shedding light on the complexities of addressing these issues within the justice system. As Muswagon remains in custody, authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the violent attack and ensure accountability for the harm caused.
