Uvalde, Texas – The families of the victims from the tragic 2022 elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, have taken legal action by filing two lawsuits against major companies, including Instagram parent company Meta, Activision Blizzard’s parent Microsoft, and gunmaker Daniel Defense. These lawsuits allege that the companies collaborated in marketing dangerous weapons to impressionable teens, such as the Uvalde shooter.
The wrongful-death complaints claim that Daniel Defense utilized Instagram and the video game “Call of Duty” from Activision Blizzard to promote its assault-style rifles to teenage boys. The families argue that Meta and Microsoft enabled this marketing strategy by failing to provide proper oversight and disregarding the potential consequences of their actions.
Following one of the deadliest school shootings in history, where 19 children and two teachers tragically lost their lives, legal action has been initiated on the two-year anniversary of the massacre. These lawsuits have been filed by the law firm Koskoff Koskoff & Bieder, which previously reached a significant settlement with rifle manufacturer Remington in a similar case involving the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
The first lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, places the blame on Instagram for providing a platform for gun manufacturers to communicate directly with minors without adequate supervision. Additionally, the complaint points out how the video game “Call of Duty” contributes to a culture of violence, with firearms modeled after real weapons that can influence impressionable teenagers.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the families involved in the lawsuits argue that there is a direct connection between the marketing tactics of these companies and the Uvalde school shooting. They accuse Daniel Defense of purposely targeting adolescent boys in their advertisements to establish lifelong customers, further deepening the impact of their actions.
Josh Koskoff, one of the families’ attorneys, emphasized the role these companies played in exposing the shooter to the weapon, normalizing its use as a solution to his problems, and providing training through the video game. With multiple lawsuits already in progress against Daniel Defense, the company’s CEO has dismissed the legal actions as meritless and politically driven.
As the legal battles continue, the families of the victims have also targeted state police officers for their response to the emergency situation during the shooting. This multi-faceted approach aims to hold all parties accountable for their roles in the devastating events that unfolded at Robb Elementary School.
