Legacy: Family of Charleston Shooting Victim Honors Father with Exhibit

MULLINS, SC – After the tragic loss of Dr. Daniel Simmons Jr. in the 2015 mass shooting at Mother Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston, his family is paying tribute to his memory by creating a lasting legacy.

Described as a giant in the eyes of his daughter Rose Simmons, Dr. Simmons was known for his numerous accomplishments, responsible nature, and generosity. Mullins Mayor Robert Woodbury recently declared June 12, 2024, to be Reverend Doctor Daniel Simmons Day, honoring the late leader’s impact on the community.

In a heartfelt ceremony, the family unveiled a new exhibit at the Mullins South Carolina Tobacco Museum, highlighting Dr. Simmons’ life and legacy. Museum curator Ronda Bain expressed admiration for the family’s resilience in the face of adversity, emphasizing their ability to embody forgiveness and love.

Rose Simmons shared the importance of forgiveness in healing and personal growth, reflecting on her father’s likely wishes in forgiving the shooter. Emotions ran high as the family expressed gratitude and pride for Dr. Simmons and the impact he had on their lives.

The exhibit, set to open in February 2025, will serve as a tribute to Dr. Simmons’ enduring influence and the values he instilled in his family and community.
