Acting Waitematā District Commander Inspector Simon Walker expressed strong disapproval of the group’s actions, stating that the protest had caused distress among children, library staff, and visitors. While acknowledging the right to freedom of speech and protest, Walker emphasized that no one, especially children, should ever feel unsafe in such situations.
The protest, led by Destiny Church groups Man Up and Legacy Sisterhood, reportedly involved aggressive behavior that prompted police intervention. Walker commended frontline staff for their swift and professional response in defusing the tense situation. Auckland Council chief executive Phil Wilson also condemned the actions of the protest, describing them as “outrageous and unacceptable.”
Wilson expressed support for the staff who handled the situation calmly and professionally, highlighting the importance of maintaining libraries and community centers as safe and inclusive spaces for all individuals. He criticized Destiny Church’s leader, Brian Tamaki, for condoning aggression and violence towards council staff, emphasizing the need for respect and tolerance in diverse communities.
In response to the incident, Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown denounced the protest as “totally unacceptable,” emphasizing the importance of upholding the rights of all community members to access public facilities without fear of intimidation or harassment. Labour leader Chris Hipkins also weighed in, criticizing Tamaki for his actions and asserting that “real men” exhibit respect, compassion, and love rather than intimidation and hate.
