Anamosa, Iowa – A man has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to the first-degree murder of a grocery store worker in Monticello. Nathan Russell’s decision to change his plea came against the advice of his attorneys during the court proceedings.
The tragic incident took place on November 7, 2023, when Russell fatally shot Aaron McAtee, a 48-year-old employee at Fareway. During the plea hearing and sentencing, McAtee’s family members shared the profound impact of the shooting on their lives. Emotional statements were read as family members expressed their grief and loss.
“I feel like I died with Aaron that day,” said Aimee Jouanne, McAtee’s sister. The victim advocate also read letters from McAtee’s brother and mother, expressing their sorrow and disbelief at the senseless act of violence.
Russell’s defense had initially planned to argue that he was intoxicated at the time of the shooting. However, he ultimately chose to plead guilty, leading to his life sentence in prison. Court records further revealed Russell’s prior arrest in 2022 on weapons and drug-related charges.
In addition to the life sentence, Russell has been ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution to McAtee’s estate. The tragic loss has left a permanent void in the lives of McAtee’s loved ones, who continue to grapple with the aftermath of the senseless act of violence. The impact of such a heinous crime resonates throughout the community, serving as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of senseless violence.
