Macomb County Man Charged in Connection with Two-Year-Old Detroit Mass Shooting

Detroit, Michigan – A Macomb County man, Jony Saad Alatto, has been charged in connection with a tragic mass shooting that occurred at an alleged drug house in Detroit two years ago. The incident resulted in the deaths of three men and left two women injured. Alatto, 32, from Macomb Township, was arraigned on Friday in 36th District Court in Detroit and remanded to jail, as confirmed by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.

Authorities stated that after committing the shootings, Alatto proceeded to rob the occupants of the residence before fleeing the scene. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy expressed confidence in the justice system prevailing and ensuring that the defendant is held accountable for his actions.

Alatto faces multiple charges, including three counts of felony murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder, five counts of armed robbery, one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and 11 counts of felony firearm. The victims were identified as John Coffie Jr., Alphonso Henry, Morriss Campbell Jr., a 55-year-old woman, and a 33-year-old woman, all of Detroit.

The incident took place in August 2022 at a known narcotics vacant location on Saratoga Street near Gratiot Avenue, leading to the discovery of the victims suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite medical efforts, Campbell passed away at the scene, while Henry and Coffie succumbed to their injuries later on.

Alatto’s criminal record includes prior convictions for home invasion, assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder, and attempted safe breaking, according to Michigan Department of Corrections records. He is scheduled to appear in court for a probable cause conference on June 7 and a preliminary exam on June 14.

The collaborative efforts of the Detroit Police Department and Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office were instrumental in piecing together the case and bringing charges against Alatto. The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of law enforcement in addressing and holding individuals accountable for acts of violence within the community.
