Man, 31, Charged with Murder After Fatal Shooting in North Queensland

Mackay, Queensland – A 31-year-old man faces charges of murder and attempted murder after a tragic shooting incident in north Queensland recently.

The suspect allegedly shot and killed a 34-year-old woman while she was in her car at a Robb Place residence in South Mackay around 4:30 pm on Wednesday. Although the victim and the suspect were not acquainted, they resided on the same street. Two teenagers in the car managed to escape unharmed. However, a 66-year-old nearby resident who confronted the man was shot in the hand and sternum. He is currently receiving treatment at Mackay Base Hospital and is in stable condition.

Following the shootings, the emergency services issued an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act, leading to a lockdown of the area where the incident occurred. The alleged shooter drove away from the scene but was eventually arrested at a service station near Hilton Street on the Bruce Highway. Police reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat.

Detective Acting Superintendent Emma Novosel provided updates on the incident, stating that the suspect had minimal previous interactions with the police. Witnesses described the weapon used in the shooting as a revolver-style weapon. The victims of the attack included the deceased woman, her 11-year-old daughter, and a 12-year-old friend of the daughter.
