Man Arrested After Violent Screwdriver Attacks on Bus Passenger and Police in Koropi

ATHENS, Greece – A 51-year-old man was taken into custody on Sunday after a violent incident on a bus in Koropi, a town southeast of Athens. The suspect allegedly attacked a fellow passenger with a screwdriver before escalating the situation by assaulting three police officers at the local police station.

According to authorities, the man fled the scene after the initial bus attack, only to later barge into the Koropi police station where the assaults on police officers took place. The station sergeant was reportedly struck on the head during the altercation. Upon arrival of the DIAS rapid response unit, the man was instructed to surrender. When he resisted, a member of the DIAS squad resorted to firing a shot at the perpetrator’s legs in order to subdue him.

Following the violent incidents, all those involved – the injured bus passenger, the assaulted police officers, and the attacker – were promptly taken to a nearby clinic for medical attention. Reports indicate that the perpetrator, who is a Greek citizen, has a history of run-ins with the law, including prior offenses such as theft and insult. The motive behind the attacks remains unclear at this time.

Law enforcement is continuing to investigate the incident to determine the underlying cause of the man’s violent behavior. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that public service workers, like police officers, can face in the line of duty. As the community processes this shocking event, authorities are stressing the importance of finding ways to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
