Authorities have disclosed that 47-year-old William Banks Jr. called 911 around 8 a.m. for a well-being check, prompting a police response to the Pentagon Apartment Complex.
Upon arrival, officers were met with gunfire from Banks on the 3rd floor before they could reach his front door. Instead of engaging in a shootout, the police maintained a defensive stance and awaited backup. The area was quickly secured, with Palm Bay Police and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office closing off Babcock St from HWY 192 to Hibiscus during peak traffic hours.
Despite the escalating situation, officers chose not to return fire, opting to contact crisis negotiators to communicate with Banks. The standoff ultimately ended with Banks emerging from his apartment armed, leading to a confrontation where police fired a barrage of shots, fatally injuring the suspect just outside his residence.
