Man hates and abuses girlfriend’s 4-month-old baby girl because he’s not her father then beats her to death and mom knew

SUSQUEHANNA TOWNSHIP, PA – A tragic case unfolded in Pennsylvania after a 4-month-old infant died from multiple injuries, and her mother and the mother’s boyfriend face serious charges in connection with her death.

Authorities say that Layla Souders, 20, initially misled investigators by attributing the infant’s injuries to an accidental fall. However, police allege that Jose Melendez Padilla, 24, deliberately harmed the child, leading to her demise.

Police responded to a 911 call reporting an infant in cardiac arrest on March 28 at an apartment outside Harrisburg. The child, identified as Ioni Souders, was later declared dead at a local hospital. An affidavit details that the injuries, which included a fractured skull, broken ribs, and a severe leg fracture, appeared to have been inflicted over a period of time, indicating ongoing abuse.

Souders reportedly changed her story after initially claiming she had accidentally dropped Ioni. According to law enforcement, she confessed that Melendez Padilla had been physically abusing the infant since February. She also avoided taking Ioni to her scheduled medical checkup due to her visible injuries.

Text messages recovered by authorities reportedly reveal Melendez Padilla’s harsh feelings toward the child. In these communications, he expressed resentment about the baby’s presence, even suggesting putting her up for adoption. On one occasion, he allegedly admitted to striking the baby, causing her to lose consciousness, and expressed frustration over the injury to her leg.

Authorities say neither Souders nor Melendez Padilla sought medical help for Ioni despite her evident suffering. Instead, Melendez Padilla reportedly resorted to using online platforms to learn about treating injuries at home. These actions, combined with efforts to cover up text communications, have led to serious charges against both individuals.

Souders faces charges including third-degree murder, child endangerment, and tampering with evidence. Melendez Padilla is charged with first-degree murder, among other offenses. He also faces legal issues due to his undocumented status, having overstayed his visa, and possessing false identification.

Both Souders and Melendez Padilla remain detained at Dauphin County Prison without the possibility of bail. Souders and Melendez Padilla next have a court appearance scheduled for Thursday.
