Man Shot Dead in Tuscaloosa in Self-Defense Altercation

Tuscaloosa, Alabama – A tragic incident unfolded early Saturday when a 51-year-old man was fatally shot after allegedly shooting another individual, according to authorities. The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit identified the man as Reggie Coverson, a resident of Tuscaloosa.

Deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting at a residence on Stardust Drive at 3:14 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Coverson deceased and a 23-year-old man injured. The injured man was promptly transported to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening wounds and is currently in stable condition, as confirmed by TVCU Capt. Marty Sellers.

A 36-year-old man at the scene confessed to shooting Coverson and was subsequently detained for questioning. Sellers mentioned that multiple witnesses were interviewed as part of the investigation.

Following the incident, the case was presented to the Tuscaloosa County District Attorney’s Office, and the shooter was released without immediate charges. It was determined that the altercation arose from a verbal argument among individuals residing at the residence, who were not related to each other.

Sellers stated that Coverson appeared to be the instigator of the confrontation and was shot in an act of self-defense. The case is set to be reviewed by a grand jury to determine any further legal actions.
