Massachusetts has hours long armed standoff after he shoots his wife as she sits on the couch

LEOMINSTER, MA – The calm of a Leominster neighborhood was shattered late Friday afternoon when police discovered the lifeless body of 62-year-old Ann Marsh inside her Union Street home, the apparent victim of a shooting during a domestic dispute.

Authorities responded to a 911 call just before 3 p.m., which gave the address of the residence before abruptly disconnecting. When officers arrived, they entered the home through an unlocked side door, prompted by distressing sounds inside. Once inside, an officer reportedly heard what she believed to be moaning, indicating someone was in urgent need of medical attention.

As law enforcement searched the house, they were confronted by James Marsh, 64, who was allegedly armed and sitting on a couch. On the couch beside him lay Ann Marsh, motionless, partially covered with a blanket. Officers quickly withdrew and called for backup when they saw Marsh’s weapon.

A tense standoff ensued as James Marsh barricaded himself in the home for more than four hours. Negotiators worked to de-escalate the situation, and eventually, Marsh surrendered peacefully to police and was taken into custody at the scene.

Inside the home, Ann Marsh was pronounced dead by investigators. According to initial findings, authorities believe she was shot during an altercation between the couple. Details surrounding the argument have not yet been disclosed, but the incident is being described by officials as a domestic case.

Court documents indicate that James Marsh is facing charges that include assault with a dangerous weapon, as well as assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, causing serious bodily injury. However, officials have signaled that those charges may be upgraded after further review of the evidence.

Neighbors expressed shock at the unfolding of tragic events, describing the Marshes as a quiet couple. Friends and family are left mourning Ann Marsh, who, according to acquaintances, was known for her warmth and generosity.

The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office is leading the investigation, with police continuing to piece together the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting. Ann Marsh’s death marks another case of domestic violence under investigation in Massachusetts, as authorities urge those experiencing abuse to seek help.

James Marsh appeared in court Monday for arraignment and is scheduled to return later this week. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials are urging anyone with information relevant to the case to come forward.
