Militant Rampage Claims Nine Lives in Dara District of Oromia Region

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – An attack by alleged “Fano militants” in Dara district, located within the North Shewa Zone of the Oromia region, resulted in at least nine fatalities and the destruction of numerous homes, according to local residents. The assault occurred on the morning of March 7, 2024, in Jiru Dada, Woren Gabro, and Manketa Wario kebeles within the Dara district.

A resident of Manketa Wario Kebele, speaking on condition of anonymity, reported that nine individuals lost their lives in the attack, with several others sustaining injuries. The resident mentioned the tragic death of an 11-year-old girl named Shetaye Dubale, who was fatally shot during the assault, along with extensive house burnings. The violence continued to escalate in Manketa Wario kebele, according to the resident.

In Woren Gabro Kebele, another resident recounted the loss of life and property destruction as a result of the assault. The resident noted the abduction of children and elderly individuals who were unable to escape the violence. Additionally, in Jiru Deda kebele, homes were set ablaze, and more than 400 cattle were stolen, leading many to seek refuge in a desert area known as Abote.

This incident in Dara district is not an isolated one, as similar violent attacks have been reported in the past. In December 2023, a two-day assault on the community resulted in 18 deaths and six injuries, also attributed to “Fano militants.” Efforts to contact Dara district administrator, Shimelis Eyalehun, were unsuccessful.

The ongoing violence in Dara district highlights the urgent need for peace and stability in the region. Local authorities must address the root causes of these attacks and work towards ensuring the safety and security of all residents. The tragic loss of life and destruction of property serve as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of conflict on communities.
