LAKEVILLE, MN – Bethany Ann Israel, a 30-year-old expectant mother, was remembered by loved ones as caring and full of joy. On what was meant to be a simple family dinner at her brother’s home, her life was abruptly ended in a crime that has left a Minnesota community reeling with shock and grief.
Israel, who was pregnant at the time of her death, was found slain in her brother’s Lakeville residence, around 23 miles south of Minneapolis. Authorities said she had gone to visit her brother, Jack Joseph Ball, for dinner. Family members grew concerned when they were unable to reach her for several hours.
When attempts to contact Bethany failed, her mother went to check on the siblings. Upon arriving at the house, she reportedly saw Ball hurriedly leaving. Inside, she discovered what officials described as a gruesome scene, prompting an immediate call to 911.
Police responding to the residence encountered a trail of blood and evidence of violence throughout the house. According to investigators, several blood-stained tools and knives were recovered at the scene, along with dismembered human remains. The crime had extended beyond the home: a short time later, a Rosemount resident called police after seeing security footage of a man leaving what appeared to be a body part on their front step.
Following a brief search, Ball was located in the backyard of a neighboring house. Authorities said he suffered a self-inflicted neck wound and was taken to a local hospital for treatment before being taken into custody.
As the investigation unfolded, authorities uncovered journals written by Ball. According to officials, the writings detailed his anger over his sister’s pregnancy, stating that she was “no longer innocent.” Ball later admitted to premeditated first-degree murder and the murder of an unborn child, with a recommended sentence of life in prison. Charges of second-degree murder were dropped as part of the plea agreement.
Bethany Ann Israel was mourned by her family as a devoted wife, daughter, and sister. Relatives described her as someone whose “radiant spirit and unwavering kindness” touched everyone she met. The tragedy has sparked an outpouring of support, with loved ones launching a fundraiser in her memory and for her grieving family.
