Missouri woman shot in the face in front of her baby by boyfriend who thinks she stole his coins to buy alcohol

MONETT, MO – What started as a tense argument over missing coins turned suddenly violent Saturday afternoon, leaving a young mother dead and a 3-month-old baby at the heart of a tragedy in rural Barry County.

According to investigators, Alan Michael Mellow, 33, admitted to fatally shooting Hannah Lee Blizard, 30, inside a parked car as their infant child sat in the back seat. The ordeal unfolded after a heated exchange at the couple’s apartment, triggered by suspicions that Blizard had taken coins from Mellow’s personal collection to support an alleged alcohol addiction.

Authorities say Mellow told them that the argument escalated quickly when Blizard decided to leave with their infant, after reaching out to her own mother for help. Mellow, unwilling to let her take the child away, said he instead gathered their baby and carried them to his Nissan. As he tried to strap the child into the back seat, Blizard followed, climbing into the vehicle in a final attempt to stop him from leaving.

Inside the car, Mellow later told police, the confrontation reached its breaking point. He claimed he pulled out a handgun he kept in the vehicle and fired at Blizard, striking her in the head several times at close range.

A neighbor who witnessed the shooting immediately called emergency services. Responding officers arrived outside the apartment complex to find Blizard lying motionless near the vehicle, bloodied and unresponsive. Mellow, meanwhile, had returned inside with the baby, where he was heard lamenting the future absence of a father in his son’s life.

Barry County deputies were able to establish contact with Mellow by phone, persuading him to surrender peacefully and hand over the unharmed child. After taking him into custody, investigators searched the apartment, locating a loaded Taurus PT809c semi-automatic handgun believed to be the weapon used in the killing. Further examination of the weapon revealed it still contained several rounds, and an additional magazine was loaded with full metal jacket bullets.

The infant, though apparently uninjured in the immediate aftermath, was taken to a nearby hospital for precautionary medical evaluation. Doctors later determined the baby had suffered a skull fracture; authorities have not yet ascertained how or when the injury occurred.

Mellow is now charged with first-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and first-degree child endangerment. He remains in the Barry County jail without bond as the investigation continues. Authorities did not specify when he might appear in court.

Family members and neighbors expressed shock as police processed the scene late into the evening. For many, the act was unfathomable, especially with a vulnerable infant present. The incident has left the tightly knit community grappling with the trauma and searching for answers amid the aftermath of an unthinkable loss.
