Murder Charge Filed Against 19-Year-Old in Fatal Shooting in Mandarin

Jacksonville, Florida – A 19-year-old man has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy in Mandarin in December 2023, as confirmed by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Colton Moore, who was already under arrest for unrelated charges, is now facing charges for the murder of Derek Pitts, 16. Pitts tragically lost his life in a shooting incident that occurred in the parking lot of the Coopers Hawk Apartment homes on Old St Augustine Road on December 30, 2023.

Authorities revealed that Pitts was caught in the crossfire during a dispute at a gathering that started at a different location and later moved to the apartment complex. Amidst the altercation between two groups, a firearm was brandished, resulting in at least 10 shots being fired, one of which struck Pitts, leading to his passing at the hospital.

Following an extensive investigation into the homicide, law enforcement received valuable tips from First Coast Crime Stoppers, allowing them to pinpoint Moore as the primary suspect in the case. Moore has since been implicated and detained in connection with the tragic incident.
