Downpatrick, Northern Ireland — A man was found dead in the Marian Park area around noon on Sunday, sparking a murder investigation. Police have taken a 30-year-old suspect into custody, raising concerns about a potential link to a violent incident that occurred earlier the same morning.
The incident unfolded at approximately 10:10 a.m. when a man allegedly entered St. Patrick’s Church and assaulted Father John Murray, hitting him on the head with a bottle. Following the attack, authorities reported that the priest sustained serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Superintendent Norman Haslett, the district commander for Newry, Mourne and Down, indicated that investigators are exploring the possibility of a connection between the two events. “Inquiries are at an early stage,” Haslett stated, emphasizing the significance of the ongoing investigation.
Detective Chief Inspector McBurney described the attack on the priest as “shocking and brutal,” urging anyone with information to reach out to law enforcement. He reiterated the need for community assistance as police pursuit leads in both incidents.
