Murder Trial Begins for Accused UA Professor Killer in Pima County

TUCSON, Ariz. – The murder trial for Murad Dervish, a former University of Arizona graduate student accused of fatally shooting Professor Thomas Meixner on campus in October 2022, began in Pima County Superior Court with prosecutors alleging that Dervish had a premeditated plan. Deputy County Attorney Hayley Weigold emphasized the importance of understanding the defendant’s actions before, during, and after the tragic event.

According to the prosecution, Dervish, 46, had been expelled from the university due to ongoing issues with professors following a poor grade. Evidence presented showed that Dervish had a history of sending aggressive and threatening emails to faculty members, including Meixner. The prosecution highlighted an email in which Dervish expressed violent intentions towards Meixner.
