GALLOWAY, NJ – A mother of three is recovering from severe injuries after a reported road rage shooting left her facing possible permanent blindness, according to local authorities.
Police say Maritza Arias-Galva, 47, was shot in the face during an apparent confrontation with another driver late Monday afternoon. The encounter began as Arias-Galva was merging on a road in Galloway Township, when an approaching vehicle allegedly cut her off, escalating into a heated altercation at a nearby red light.
According to investigators, the driver, identified as 46-year-old Ernest Heinz, pulled up alongside Arias-Galva and threatened her before firing a single round through the driver’s window of her vehicle. The bullet struck her in the eye, causing extensive injuries. Despite her critical condition, Arias-Galva remained conscious and was able to give officers a description of the shooter and vehicle involved.
The shooting occurred near Stockton University, which prompted authorities to temporarily lock down the campus as they searched for the suspect. After several hours, officers located and arrested Heinz at his home in Atlantic County.
Heinz, who has worked as a film and television actor with minor credits, including appearances in “The Sopranos,” is facing multiple charges, such as attempted homicide, two counts of aggravated assault, and weapons offenses. He remains at the Atlantic County Justice Facility without bail, pending a scheduled pretrial detention hearing on Tuesday.
Family members say Arias-Galva’s prognosis is uncertain, and doctors are concerned she may never regain her sight. Speaking on behalf of the family, her son, Victor Feliz-Alvarez, expressed hope for legal accountability for the man accused of attacking his mother.
Authorities say Heinz allegedly yelled threats at Arias-Galva through his car window before drawing a firearm and shooting. The criminal complaint states that the weapon fired shattered the glass and led to Arias-Galva’s injuries.
Investigators continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses. Police have not released additional details about what may have provoked the confrontation beyond the initial merging incident.
Galloway Township officials are urging anyone who may have witnessed the encounter or has dashcam footage from the area to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.
As Arias-Galva recovers in the hospital, her family is focused on her treatment and rehabilitation, while legal proceedings for Heinz are set to begin in the coming days.
