New York man stabs girlfriend as their 6-year-old son begs him to stop the attack

BRENTWOOD, NY – A New York woman awoke to a nightmare—her partner standing over her with a knife, uttering words no one should ever hear in the safety of their own home: “You are going to die here.” One year after the terrifying ordeal, justice has been served for the Brentwood mother who survived a violent assault in front of her children and niece.

Albaro Chacon, 38, was sentenced Monday to 15 to 17 years behind bars following his conviction on several charges, including attempted assault, assault, tampering with evidence, and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child. The sentencing comes after a harrowing sequence of events that nearly claimed the life of the mother of his two children and traumatized their young family.

The attack took place in November 2024 inside a Brentwood home that the victim and Chacon shared. Authorities said the woman was suddenly awakened in the night, confronted by Chacon threatening her with a knife. Her sheer will to survive and to protect the children nearby drove her to fight back. During the struggle, she was stabbed multiple times in the arms as she attempted to shield herself and her then-2-year-old niece, who had been sleeping in the room at the time.

The woman’s actions during the assault were both courageous and selfless. Rather than focus solely on her own safety, she tried to push the little girl out of harm’s way even as she herself was fighting off the attack. Despite her injuries, she managed to escape the bedroom and flee the house for help.

Once outside, she spotted her two young children—ages 6 and 5—inside a parked car, a chilling indication that the children may have been exposed to the violence or its immediate aftermath. As she attempted to get assistance, her young son reportedly rushed from the car, pleading for his father to stop. Chacon then retreated back into the home.

While the woman waited anxiously for police, Chacon was reportedly inside trying to cover up evidence of the crime. When she ventured back into the residence, she noticed the distinct smell of bleach and realized that bedding from where the attack occurred had been removed. Her priority remained her children’s safety, as well as that of her niece.

Emergency responders soon arrived and transported the woman to a local hospital for treatment of her wounds. Authorities said her quick actions almost certainly saved her life and possibly those of the children in her care.

The case reached its conclusion when a jury convicted Chacon on November 19, 2025, on all charges. The judge’s decision to impose a 15-to-17-year sentence reflects the severity of the crime and the enduring trauma inflicted on the victim and her children.

Through it all, the brave actions of the victim have become a testament to a mother’s instinct to protect her loved ones, even in the face of grave danger. The court’s decision aims to bring a degree of closure, though the memories of that night will likely remain with her and her family.
